Refuse to be eaten alive

Biting bugs can be pesky little creatures, never more so than when you’re spending time under canvas. But, as we very well know, part and parcel of loving the great outdoors is to love all creatures great and small, even if we’d rather not love them within our tent. So, rather than creating a huge buzz about bugs, why not look into some natural ways to keep them and their bites at bay? We’ve got some great ones for you!

ESSENTIAL OIL REPELLENT

Essential oils are fairly easy to come by nowadays. But did you know many of them offer natural bug repelling qualities? Oh yes. So it’s well worth looking into making your own natural insect repellent. Check these out for their bug deterring qualities:

  • Cedarwood
  • Thyme
  • Sage
  • Eucalyptus
  • Geranium
  • Catnip
  • Lemongrass
  • Clove
  • Citronella
  • Lavender
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Tea Tree
  • Rosemary

Although you can apply some (but not all) essential oils directly to the skin, you’re best off making a spray to apply to your clothing. This will help avoid any potential irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Mix 10 to 20 drops of your chosen natural repellent with a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, half a cup of natural witch hazel and half a cup of water and decant into a spray bottle. Remember to give it a good shake before using it, as the ingredients will separate when not in use.

And the added bonus to natural bug repelling? You may also enjoy the smell of your essential oil concoction too – some of them are lush!

BURN SAGE

As well as being a natural repellent when applied via essential oils, burning sage leaves by your campfire will help repel mosquitos and ticks. Because they don’t like the smell of sage, it will stop them from buzzing into your campfire area. On top of this, the smell will linger on your skin and clothes which will give you further protection even once the fire has gone out.

AVOID SCENTED LOTIONS

Bugs love the smell of scented lotions and perfumes, so avoiding them is one way to stop them from finding you attractive. And what better time is there to ditch the cosmetics and really get back to nature than when camping?!

EAT MINT AND GARLIC (NOT NECESSARILY TOGETHER!)

Repelling the bugs really is all about the scent. Eating certain things like garlic and mint will help you give off a natural odour which bugs detest. In fact, if you don’t mind smelling like a piece of garlic bread, you could even rub a clove or two directly onto your skin. It’s an age-old method of deterring the mosquitoes… and the vampires!

USE SCREENS AND NETS

Of course, you can also place screens and nets inside your tent to keep the insects out. Screen room tents in particular are a great way of keeping pest-free when camping. These tents have screen walls which keep the bugs out but still allow you to enjoy your time under the stars.

Camping doesn’t have to be a total bug fest, and as well as screens and nets, you can also buy the likes of bug repellent bracelets and mosquito repellent lanterns and candles to reduce your risk of getting bitten. If you’re ready to create a buzz about pest-free camping, stock up on some of the natural essentials and bug repellent camping gear, and get out there!
