Create your Outdoor Adventure Agenda for 2020

Ollie Ford on 6th Jan 2020

Here at Outhaus we love the New Year. It marks a fresh page in the diary and a blank canvas to plan our outdoor adventures for the year ahead. Are you ready to make the most of 2020 and plan your outdoor adventure agenda? If so, you’ve come to the right place, as we’ve rounded up some of the most enticing escapades that you’ve just got to try some time this year!

1. Go Scottish Wild Camping

There’s no better way to truly get back to nature than with a spot of wild camping. 2020 feels so futuristic, and let’s face it most of us are plugged in at all times, so getting away from it all with a night under canvas - and off the beaten track away from designated campsites to boot - is truly freedom inspiring. It’s a real way to get away from it all.

It’s illegal to wild camp in almost all of England and Wales, however it is legal in much of Scotland. Always check the guidelines of the Open Access Code, but why not pitch up next to a beautiful waterfall in Glenfeshie, with the backdrop of the Cairngorm mountains surrounding you? It’s time to be at one with nature this year.

2. Become a Navigation Expert

Would you love to do more hill walking or hiking but worry about getting lost? If so, make 2020 the year to learn navigation.

There are various courses available, such as a one day introductory course in the pretty Peak District, run by expert mountain leaders and rock climbing instructors. The skills taught – including map reading, compass navigation and route planning – will give you the confidence you need should the worst happen and you find yourself stranded.

3. Discover Bushcraft

Bushcraft is a great way to gain all-round skills to help you when out and about and under canvas or in your campervan. From fire lighting, foraging and shelter building through to campfire cooking and natural first aid, bushcraft encompasses so many excellent skills which will enhance your time outdoors.

Whether you go on a formal course, or attend one of the many fantastic bushcraft shows throughout the country, such as The Bushcraft Show, bushcraft is a great way to get the most out of your 2020 outdoor adventures.

4. Head off the Beaten Track with Trail Running

If your New Year’s resolution for 2020 is to take up running, why not do so off the beaten track? OK if you’re new to running you might want to stick to local parks to start with, but once you’ve gained more experience, trail running can be an exhilarating way to exercise in the wilds of the great outdoors.

There are events and guided trails organised by various companies, such as Wild Running, but you don’t need to be part of an organised group if you’d rather enjoy the escapism that trail running can give you alone. Check out one – or many - of the various trails available up and down the country which you can enjoy at any time.
