The weather’s getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and of course that means our feet are getting a little itchy! Ready to road trip? Then it’s time to plan your routes!

Have you thought about a UK road trip? While the South of France is blue and warm and Scandinavia offers all sorts of adventures, be sure not to overlook the beauties on our very own doorstep. Many an adventurer has said that the UK holds some of the greatest treasures in terms of landscapes, natural beauty and picturesque architecture (and that’s not just the Outhaus team, honest!). So what are you waiting for? It’s time to hit the road!

1. THE SOUTHWEST’S ATLANTIC HIGHWAY

Hitting the road running, we’re starting with a surfer’s paradise: Southwest England’s Atlantic Highway is steeped in maritime history, wild beauty and views on a big scale. The stretch between Barnstaple and Newquay is particularly picturesque, and from Bridgewater to Bude you’ll find a concertina of beautiful beaches and bays.

If you’re not of the windswept, sun-kissed surfer variety, you’ll also find the Exmoor National Park readily available for rugged walks, seafood aplenty in Padstow and of course you can head right the way down to Land’s End to relish in maritime myth, too.

Best For: Those who crave the salty sea air.

2. THE LAKE DISTRICT

From Kendal to Windermere, the Lake District is simply stunning from whatever angle you approach it. It’s UNESCO listed for a reason, and offers everything from beautifully haunting castles, rolling moorland, abbey ruins and of course all the quaint villages you’d associate with the Lake District. And all of this on a backdrop of some of the world’s most stunning lakes.

For a longer road trip, why not combine it with a Scottish borders tour? There’s plenty to explore, not least historic Hadrian’s Wall. Alternatively, indulge your inner culture vulture and visit some of the literary sites in the Lakes. Road trip around the Lake District, and it suddenly becomes obvious why the area inspired writers from Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter…

Best For: Those looking for a slower pace of life but with plenty of culture on the side.

3. THE LAND OF THE GIANTS, NORTHERN IRELAND

Shrouded in myth and legend, the Giant’s Causeway coastline has long been an Outhaus favourite. We love that it’s actually made up of nine scenic drives, which gives us plenty of opportunity to site-hop and break your adventure into smaller chunks to really take in the region.

As well as the Giant’s Causeway itself, for those of you who love a little bit of adventure you can also walk the dramatic Gobbins Cliff Path or cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, if you’ve got a head for heights. Of course, all of this can be topped off with visits to historic Belfast and Londonderry, and if you fancy a detour, why not visit Game of Thrones country, with a pootle down to Dark Hedges in Antrim and Ballintoy Harbour?

Best For: Those that crave a little bit of drama!

4. YORKSHIRE’S FINEST

For something a little bit different, how about taking a circuit route through Yorkshire? You’ll find a bit of everything here: medieval history, beautiful villages and even the odd waterfall!

There’s plenty for foodies too: the historic town of Harrogate offers the delightful Betty’s which famous is for its afternoon tea; Wensleydale will allow you to stock up on your favourite cheese and Malton hasn’t been dubbed ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ for nothing, with its wide range of award-winning eateries and family run producers.

Wensleydale – THE place to go for some good old Yorkshire cheese, and stunning scenery.
